Hello and welcome to my website, Matgilson.com. Here you will find a collection of some of my professional art work along with some of my own personal pieces. I have been working on films as a Digital Matte Painter and Concept Artist since early 2006. I got into doing my own visual effects early in high school on my computer at home that my brother had built. Every school project I could, I would make a video with some sort of visual effect attempt in it. It was then in my life I knew I wanted to make movies. I began my actual career in Visual Effects, as a visual effects supervisor and digital artist on an independent feature film while I was still in college. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics from the Art Institutes International Minnesota, I moved out to Los Angeles where I was picked up by the award-winning visual effects facility Hy*drau"lx, based in Santa Monica, CA. Over these past few years I have been extremely lucky to have been able to work with such a talented group of artists, and to have learned more about the art of visual effects and storytelling than I could have ever hoped for. It has been a lot of hard work and a far journey to get where I am today, doing what I love, making art everyday...but definitely worth the effort.
